We hired a driver through Tibetan Connections, and drove around Qinghai Lake for a couple of days...

Chinese:  白云观 (Báiyún Guān)
Getting there: Walk 500m west along the river from Zhōngshān Qiáo (中山桥), OR walk 250m north from Xiguan Mosque

A small temple, that makes for a pleasant stop on a riverside walk, possibly combined with a walk past the Xiguan Mosque. However, some parts are under renovation at the moment (August 2008), so it might not be the best time to visit.

In any case, if you have time, the temple at Wŭquán Shàn Gōngyuán (五泉山公园) on the south edge of the city centre is more interesting, and the park itself has a lot going on.

One of the advantages of being based in Lanzhou, is that China's 'remote' northwest is actually pretty close by.

Xīníng (西宁), capital of Qinghai Province, to Gansu's west, is around 3 hours away by train (50 yuan, soft seat).

We left on the 7.42am train, and by lunchtime had checked into our hostel.

We spent the afternoon at Tă'ĕr Sì (塔尔寺), the Tibetan monastery nearby, by taxi (45 yuan each way).

MUSIC FOUNTAIN 08/14/2008

This walk took us from the north side of the Huáng Hé Dàqiáo (黄河大桥, bus #107), starting at the 'Music Fountain' (音乐喷泉 yīnyuè pēnquán) along Bĕi Bīnhé Lù (北滨河路) to Zhōngshān Qiáo (中山桥).
